BIOGRAPHY
If you ask me WHAT IS? and WHO IS? Papa Jack, I would have a hard time answering that question. You see, Papa Jack has many faces in terms of sound and the musicians that create that sound. Since I first co-started this band in May 2001, it has gone through dramatic changes and its sound has constantly evolved.
We started this group hoping to add a little funky music to the Hong Kong music scene. Our originals have a flavour of not only funk but also of rock, pop, and ska. Other than originals, we also play cover songs that range from pop, oldies, disco, rock, funk, reggae and jazz. Our wide range of musical styles enables us to play at many different types of concerts and functions.
As for who and what is Papa Jack? I can best describe this band as a collaboration of international musicians from Hong Kong, Philippines, Japan, and the U.S.A., all sharing the same love and passion for playing and making music.
The members of Papa Jack include myself(Ron Tupac) on vocals/guitar/saxophone, singers Maybelle Padillio and Gretchell Yaneza, guitarist/singer Wendell Magtalas, bassists Ramon Gica , Ed Marollano, Koya Hisakazu and Siu Ming Chan, Keyboardist Dudong Legaspi and drummers Jimi Galvea and Antonio Serrano Jr.
Besides playing regular gigs at certain venues, wefve also joined a few band competitions. One competition we did very well in was the Soundbase Acoustic Competition in September 2002 with singer Sharon Loi on back-up vocals. With the performance of our original song gYOU,h we took home the 1st place award.
Other awards include Best Guitarist at Asia Beat 2002 and 3rd place/Best Drummer Award at the True Music Band Competition in May 2005.
